I am the youngest of 11 (siblings) comprised of seven sisters and three brothers. I grew up Amish on a farm East of Mt. Hope.
I left the Amish when I was 18 or 19. I started working at Boyd & Wurthman Restaurant around 16 or 17 and I met my husband there. He is from Canton, Ohio. He worked at a trucking company down here and came in to eat every day. Soon he came in 2 or 3 times a day. I met him while I was still Amish.

Most of my job experiences were in food or waitressing. I got married in 1986. Later my husband and I decided to do foster care. We did that for thirteen years. We had 80-90 kids in those 13 years. In a lot of ways that was very rewarding; but in other ways very painful!
In 2004, we purchased our BBQ Smoker Cooker BBQ pit. We went to Georgia to get it. My husband wanted it. I remember telling him, “if we buy that it will have to pay for itself.” We started just BBQing and practicing on family and friends. That lead to cooking in the parking lot of the wallpaper store in Berlin, Ohio. We made BBQ chicken, baked beans, noodles, and Italian sausage. We would sell out in 1-2 hours and our day was done by one or two in the afternoon. So this was good. We also started doing private parties for graduations, weddings, etc.

In 2005, I started working at the diner, which at the time was the Berlin Diner. I began working with the owners. And then in September of 2006, I took over and the diner is now Cindy’s Diner. I have worked very hard to make it a comfortable atmosphere where I offer good homemade food. When visiting Berlin, some people walk in wanting an Amish restaurant (not knowing that Amish people don’t own restaurants.) But being raised that way makes it as close as it gets!
We have home-cooked meals along with great burgers and hot dogs etc. Our cream pies are my family recipes, as well as some of the other recipes we make. We have great milk shakes and root beer floats, as well as 24 flavors of ice cream that are hand-dipped. Our Hershey brownie sundae is wonderful and big enough to share. We also do catering and BBQs.
I have always loved cooking and trying new things. We won the Judges Choice in our Rib Fest in 2008. We have the annual Harvest Fest in September. My husband helps me in some of the BBQing. It is a lot of work but very rewarding. We meet some amazing people and make some great friends.
I love to go 4-wheeling and traveling. If I ever have time I would like to get some scrap booking done.
